Callin' the Blue, Grand Ol' Gang and True Blues by Andy Thomas
After the huge success of Grand Ol' Gang (Republican presidents playing poker) and True Blues (Democratic presidents doing the same), best selling artist Andy Thomas is at it again---this time with an encore performance of the same presidential cast members playing pool called, Callin' the Blue.
In the 13-year history of A Simpler Time, we have never had a print series sell nearly as well as the "Presidents playing poker" series featuring past and present commanders in chief playing friendly games of cards. Our easels in the front windows of our stores in the Mall of America in Minnesota and in New Orleans near the convention center had a permanent spot on the double easel for Grand Ol' Gang and True Blues.
In the Mall of America location, early morning mall walkers would never fail to stop in their tracks to view the pieces, and inevitably a political discussion would break out with one side labeling a certain presidential portrait "wonderful" and wondering who would even want to hang the other. Surprisingly, we had quite a few customers purchase the set---even many Republican delegates attending their convention in Minnesota during the fall of 2009!
One realtor purchased the set to display in his front office window and was amazed to look up at lunchtime one day to see a crowd of people gathered in front of his business. While he had definite political leanings, he felt it wasn't good business to alienate potential customers by purchasing and displaying only one party.
Callin' the Blue
Unfortunately, most versions of Grand Ol' Gang (Republicans playing poker) sold out over the past year and are no longer available (we do have some of the more expensive, very impressive larger canvas giclees left). So, we're very pleased to announce the newest art release by the talented Andy Thomas called, Callin' the Blue. Featuring our same cast of living and dead presidents---including both Bushes, Ronald Reagan, Abraham Lincoln, Richard Nixon, Dwight Eisenhower, Gerald Ford, and Teddy Roosevelt---only this time playing pool or billiards!
Check out all the subtle touches on this great piece, such as the stained glass lamp with an elephant motif, the painting of George Washington in the background, and even the framed Grand Ol' Gang behind Nixon and Reagan. Thomas captures the Grand Old Party's leaders enjoying a humorous moment as Lincoln calls his ball shot---which happens to be blue.
