Nostalgic, Vintage Wood Signs
After 12 years of selling product from A Simpler Time in some of the nation's busiest retail locations, we like to think we have the best selection of nostalgic, vintage-style wood signs with retro graphics in the country.
In our New Orleans store, which has over 60 feet of windows facing the aquarium along the Mississippi River, we've found that shoppers peering into our store inevitably wander in and are drawn to our large collection of personalized wood signs. Unfortunately, no matter how many descriptive cards we use, customers often don't realize the distressed vintage signs can be personalized at no extra charge. They typically page through the stacks of retro signs (we stack them on the floor as well as hanging on walls), trying to find the perfect plaque with their name or lake.
Almost all of our wood or metal signs are custom made with your name, lake, town or state replacing the ones used in our samples. Your name is not just painted in a spot left blank in a completely different font. It is painted at the same time as the rest of the retro graphics in a complementary fashion that makes the finished work look like a totally custom sign. And with the faux distressed "antique" edges, our signs look like antique signs handed down from your grandparents.
The Best Vintage-Style Wood Signs
While our retro style signs typically are hung indoors, one of the most common questions we get is, "Can these signs be hung outdoors?" The answer is a little complicated. If you mean, "will my wood sign look like the day I bought it after ten years in the elements," the answer is no. While our paints are highly UV and fade resistant, unfortunately there has not been a paint invented yet (including for your house or deck) that will show no fading or wear eventually.
Having said that, we've been very happy with the results when our wood or metal signs have been hung outdoors. One customized "deer shack" sign hung under a roof, but facing directly south and exposed to harsh light bouncing off snow in northern Minnesota, looks like the day it came out of the
box..five years ago. A neighbor who put her pool rules sign outside (after spraying with lacquer), has seen little wear or tear in four years of temps ranging from 30 below to 95 above.
Most of our personalized nostalgic signs are custom made and take from 2-4 weeks (depending on the season) to make and ship.
